How To Brew A
Better Cup Of Coffee
Master the perfect slow pour.

Why wait in line at Blue Bottle? With a little practice and the right set of tools, the perfect pour over coffee can be made right at home. Check out our few easy steps and all of the essentials needed for a masterful home brew.

1. Measure Your Beans

There’s no exact rule to the exact proportions – it’s more a matter of taste. You’ll come to understand your desired ratios over time, but a good starting point is 15g of water for every 1g of coffee. We love this included with our coffee carafe set, conveniently shaped to also hold your filter after your coffee has brewed.

2. Grind your coffee

Always use a burr, rather than blade grinder. Burr grinders are much better at maintaining the flavor and aroma of the coffee beans. Also, be conscious of the coarseness – a fine, sand-like grind is ideal for the pour over brewing technique.

3. Set up your carafe and filter

We prefer to brew our pour over coffee using a glass carafe – it allows you to admire the rich color of the coffee and the steam billowing within the vessel. We also prefer to use a stainless steel filter – it’s reusable, so you’ll never have to worry about running out of filters. Once you have these tools ready, add your ground coffee to the filter.

4. Get to pouring

Pour a small amount of hot water into the center of the coffee mound and let it bloom for 30 sec. Then slowly pour more hot water—drawing a spiral from the center. The Kinto Glass Carafe has small white dots to mark 2 cups (300ml) and 4 cups (600ml). We strongly recommend investing in a pour over water kettle, as the narrow spout will allow you to slowly, and effectively bloom the coffee, without over-flooding the grounds.

5. Enjoy your brew

After you’ve brewed the desired amount, remove the stainless steel filter and pour the coffee into your favorite mug!
